Do you know the legal tyre tread depth?
Although 92% of drivers check their tyres before each new journey they make, only 38% of LGV drivers know the correct minimum legal tread depth for their truck’s tyres.
A survey carried out by Goodyear and the Freight Transport Association’s (FTA) Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has highlighted that the majority of drivers questioned were unfamiliar with the new EU fuel efficiency tyre label and were unable to identify the 1mm legal tread depth.
Of the 90 LGV drivers questioned, only 41% respondents correctly identified all five factors in which tyres can affect fuel consumption.
Andy Timms, area manager for the Freight Transport Association’s VIS team, said: “It is important to remember that the tyres are the only part of the vehicle, whether a 7.5 tonne rigid or a 44 tonne artic/trailer combination, which are in contact with the road surface and therefore play a vital role in the roadworthiness of the vehicle and the drivers’ everyday safety.”
