Government trial of 80mph speed limit
Individual Police force discretion will be used when the government begins a trial of an 80mph speed limit next year.
The Department for Transport’s (DfT) response to the Transport Committee’s road safety proposals has led the DfT to reiterate its commitment to trialing a new national speed limit on, as yet undefined, motorways where variable speed limits are in place.
“It will be for the police to consider their approach to enforcement in these locations and we will work with the Association of Chief Police Officers on this matter,” the DfT said.
In order to carry out the proposed trial, the DfT will need to amend the Motorways Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations 1974, via a special roads provision contained within the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984.
